The English word advent comes from a Latin word meaning “to come.” Taking this time each year to remember the anticipation and longing helps us not forget how significant Jesus’ first coming really was, and how joyous it is that we can say, “Christ has come!” We’re also reminded that we, too, live in a time of longing for the coming of Christ—his second coming, when he will come to rule the world with justice and peace. Advent reminds us that we also live in anticipation for the glorious return of Christ when trumpets will sound and angels will again herald his arrival.

This Advent we will look to Christ as the true and better Adam, Israel, Moses, David, and Lamb. May we see Christ more clearly and celebrate his greatness more deeply. May we look to Christ this Christmas season, celebrating his first coming and anticipating his return. Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus!
